Why Hire a Fishing Guide

When planning a fishing vacation in or around West Yellowstone, you’ll most certainly want to check out all your options to make it the best trip ever. Local guides have much knowledge of the area and can take you to the most abundant fishing spots. They also know all the “tricks of the trade” and how to increase your chances of hooking that once-in-a-lifetime trout.

Obtain a Fishing License

You’ll need two separate licenses to fish in Montana, but don’t despair. Obtaining them is simple. First you need a Conservation License, and then you can get your fishing license.

A Conservation License applicant must provide his or her driver’s license or a valid photo ID and their social security number. It is valid for the holder from 1 March through the end of February of the following year.

Get your conservation and fishing license at the same time at a sporting goods store in Montana or you can also apply for them on the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks website. To find which sporting goods stores provide licenses, a list of all licensing agents is on the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks website.

A fishing license is nontransferable and nonrefundable. A Conservation License is $9.25 and valid for a year. The fishing license can be for two days ($15), 10 days ($43.50) or a season ($60). Anglers who are under 15 years of age can fish without a license but they must be accompanied by an adult that does have a valid fishing license.

A separate permit is needed to fish within Yellowstone National Park. Anglers who are 11 years old and under can fish with no permit as long as supervised by an adult. Those from 12 to 15 years old need to get a non-fee permit. Everyone 16 years and older is required to get a 10-day ($10) or a season ($20) permit.
