Montana is a headwaters state. Its pristine waters offer abundant wild trout and other fish species. Montana waters are created by the unnamed trickles and streams born in snowmelt leading to the great rivers of the Missouri, Madison, Yellowstone, Big Hole, Bitterroot and Bighorn. Some rivers are impounded to form reservoirs like Fort Peck, Canyon Ferry, Georgetown and Hebgen, along with natural beauties like the giant Flathead Lake. These habitats are managed by the Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks, and with aggressive conservation efforts have resulted in landmark legislation that protects the habitat for these wild trout to thrive. Fish and Game can offer current information, along with the regulations of each water system. A fishing license is required in the state of Montana.
