Yellowstone National Park Lodges operates larger, busier camprounds at Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant Village, Madison, and Fishing Bridge. Lower cost campgrounds are at Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Mammoth, Norris, Pebble Creek, Slough Creek, and Tower Falls. Opening dates vary with weather and road conditions so it is wise to double check availability of specific camping areas. Generally, you need to arrive early to get a site as some campgrounds fill up as early as 8am. For those who carry their tents on their backs and want no neighbors other than their hiking buddies, there is plenty of room out there. Some areas in the Yellowstone backcountry are delicate habitat and visitors must camp in designated areas for a limited time only. Check with the Yellowstone Backcountry Office for rules, reservations and advice.
Campgrounds located in the park are in no comparison to motel lodging. Amenities are sparse, but some do have laundry facilities, showers, bathrooms and potable water, which are quite luxurious for campers who have experienced the world's more primitive campgrounds. Regulations in camping areas require tents set up in designated areas only with stays limited to 14 days between June 15 and Labor Day, and to 30 days the rest of the year, except for Fishing Bridge, where there is no limit. Check out times for all campgrounds is 10am. Quiet hours are strictly enforced between hours of 8pm and 8am. No generators or loud music are allowed during these hours.

In the northeast area of the park, the Tower Fall campground is near a convenience store, restaurant, and gas station at Tower Lodge, nineteen miles north of Canyon Village and eighteen miles east of Mammoth. Slough Creek campground is in a remote section of the Lamar Valley near the northeast entrance. This remote site offers fewer people, good fishing, and the possibility of wolf sightings is good.
Canyon campground is the busiest in the park, so generally requires an early check in. Sites are assigned by the rangers, and are in a heavily wooded area. The store, restaurants, visitor center, and laundry facilities are nearby the Canyon Center. Fishing Bridge is for hard-sided camping vehicles only. Over the years, attempts have been made to close the RV park due to the high spring bear activity. It still remains open, but sometimes its opening is delayed.
Bridge Bay is located near the shores of Yellowstone Lake. This is an area offering tremendous views of the lake, especially at sunrise and sunset. Unfortunately, the area has been clear cut so there is little privacy except around the perimeter which is surrounded by forest. It is close to boat luanching facilities and boat rental operations.
Madison is in a wooded area just south of the river. This a popular spot with good access to fishing and hiking. Norris is one of the park's better camping areas, located in the heart of the park, close to wildlife activity and the Gibbon River.
Outside of Yellowstone National Park through the west entrance into West Yellowstone, are three National Forest Service campgrounds, located in the Gallatin National Forest. Bakers Hole and Rainbow Point accommodate RVs only and Lonesomehurst accommodates RVs and tent campers. In addition, there are a few RV parks in the town of West Yellowstone, The Hidaway RV Campground and The Yellowstone Park KOA.
