Backcountry snowmobiling is an exciting adventure. It provides the thrill of a lifetime. When you take a backcountry snowmobile trip, you have access to unlimited mountain terrain and snow covered playgrounds. You can take a short day trip or plan a vacation package that includes multi-night camping or lodging in the most pristine territory in American.
In one single day, you can travel over 500 miles of trails and enjoy many open playgrounds covered in white. Some vacation packages could also include meals and lodging. A guided backcountry tour comes complete with professional guides and the latest and greatest in snowmobile equipment. If you have a desire for winter adventure, and high speed fun, then backcountry snowmobiling is just the activity for you. Breathtaking scenery, meadows, and wildlife will be within easy view as you glide along the carpet of snow.
The most popular locations around West Yellowstone from which to explore backcountry terrain west of town are around Hegben Lake, Lionshead Peak and the Continental Divide trail system, which links up the Island Park region south and west in Idaho. A well-maintained and groomed trail system connects these regions making your sledding pleasure as seamless as possible.
There are also other backcountry sledding regions around Yellowstone National Park that offer comparable terrain and excitement. These include:
South of the Park in the Dubois and Moran, Wyoming area, affectionately known as Togwotee Pass. This is some of Wyoming's premier sledding since it is along the backbone of the Continental Divide trail at over 9,000 feet in elevation.
Around the northeast entrance, Cooke City and the Beartooth Pass host incredible powder, large bowls, and an extensive trail system. Access to this area can come through Yellowstone Park's north entrance (taking the road from Gardiner east past Tower Junction, out the northeast entrance into Cooke City), or from the east through Wyoming and Montana. From Billings, head south on Hwy. 212, 310 and MT. Hwy 72 (which becomes Wyoming state Hwy. 120), then turning due west on Wyoming Hwy. 296 to where the winter road closure parking lot is established. From Cody, Wyoming, take Hwy. 120 north and east until it intersects with Wyo. Hwy. 296, then continue west until it reaches its winter-closure post. From that parking area, it is a short snowmobile ride into Cooke City.
For snowmobile lovers who really want to access virgin territory and not hardly see any snowmobiles along their routes, we suggest heading way north to the Glacier Park region. Snowmobiling just outside this park boundary in the surrounding forest areas offers vast areas of USFS service and logging roads, all ideal for trail or backcountry riding.
