Snowmobiling //
West Yellowstone, Montana is a basecamp for exceptional snowmobiling. Whether you decide to take a guided tour along Yellowstone's groomed trails or rent your own sled and head out to the trails and backcountry areas near West Yellowstone, you won't be disappointed. The area is so well known for its variety of backcountry areas and trails, that many individuals travel to the area specifically to go snowmobiling.
Backcountry Snowmobiling and Trails
Because of national park regulations and the availability of better technology, many snowmobile enthusiasts have started exploring the trails and backcountry areas in West Yellowstone's Beaverhead-Deerlodge, Gallatin, and Targhee National Forests. Snowmobilers are encouraged to use a guide if they are new to the sport or if it is their first time exploring the area. Otherwise, snowmobile rentals are widely available and there is nothing like cruising the powdery rolling hills in West Yellowstone's backcountry in freedom.
There are a number of backcountry trails areas to head to with your sled, but here are some that rank high on most snowmobilers lists:
- Island Park backcountry trails
- Top Two Trail
- Big Sky Trail
- Lionshead Trail
- Horse Butte Loop
- South Plateau Trail
- Continental Divide Trail
Yellowstone National Park Trails
Over the last decade, the park service has cracked down on regulating the number of sleds it will allow into the park. Snowmobilers may only enter the park if they are part of an organized and commercial tour. Yellowstone National Park offers an extremely unique experience for snowmobiling along groomed trails and among wildlife.
If you have the time, check out both Yellowstone and the area's backcountry trails and areas.
