Montana Tourism is one of the state's top industries - and growing.

There were nearly 10 million nonresident visitors to the State of Montana in 2002, spending $1.8 billion.

The bulk of this spending - $1.4 billion - was for retail items such as food, gas, clothes, gifts, sporting goods and other products. This means 78 cents out of every Montana tourism dollar being spent in local shops.

Montana travel visitors ate over 110 thousand meals in Montana in 2002 - that's $469 million worth of Montana beef, wheat, and other food and beverage products!

Tourism and recreation businesses provide over 33,000 Montana jobs. Visitor vacation / travel spending supports over $500 million in worker salaries.

Nonresident travel to the State of Montana allows a higher level of airline / flight service to Montana airports. Half of the total airline passengers flying in and out of the state are visitors.

High granite peaks, forests, lakes, and such wonders as those of Yellowstone and Glacier National Park attract many visitors to Montana.

Other places of interest include the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the Big Hole National Battlefield, and the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site. The National Bison Range, outside Ravalli Montana, offers viewing of herds of buffalo..

Strips of Yellowstone National Park, including the north and west entrances, are in Montana. Native American reservations such as the Blackfoot, the Fort Belknap, the Fort Peck, and the Crow are located within the state.

Rushing mountain streams and numerous lakes bring fishing / fly fishing enthusiasts to the state during ummer months, and the abundant wildlife - elk, deer, bear, moose, and waterfowl - makes hunting a major draw for the state in the fall. Mountain and ski resorts draw other people for snowmobiling and ski vacations throughout winter.
